As the duct size is reduced the velocity increases. 9" dia pipe This would be for 1/4 of the hood design using your figures. This is where the duct sizing comes in.ĬFM divided by (/) velocity(fpm) = Square foot duct area.ħ75cfm/1500fpm =. Smoke collected from the plasma hood should be designed for about 1500 fpm. Metal dust collection is about 4000 feet per minute(fpm). Velocity of the air(transport velocity) differs with each. There is a big difference in the design parameters of the two different systems. If you are going to exhaust the dirty air outdoors the fan you have purchased might not be a good one for that purpose. If so you should seek advice if that is a good idea or not. It appears you are attempting to capture the smoke from the plasma burning process, filter it and return the air to your working environment. Entirely possible I'm overthinking all of this. Any suggestions or advice?Īnother question I've had is whether two pickups should be directly across from each other of if they should be staggered. You can also see the center cross brace.there will be a divider in the middle to help with the zoning. There will be four pickups total, the two shown by the white circles and two on the opposite side. In the second picture, that's roughly how I was going to cut the pickup tube (4" exhaust tubing) to shield a bit against larger stuff getting sucked in. Ok a picture is worth a thousand words and I think that was a pretty crappy description.īasically, where the white circles are drawn is about there I am planning on cutting through. Since the table plenum sides are angled, I can't just cut the pickup tubes flush with them for the same reason, they'd catch even more large debris. I planned on beveling the end of the pipe sticking into the table under the grate (picture an exhaust tip) so that it won't suck in larger pieces that might fall in front of it, but instead let them fall to the bottom to be cleaned out later. They'll each be Y'ed and run to both ends of the table, that way when I close off half of the the table, I'm still using both fans to exhaust the fumes, not just letting one sit idle while the other works.Īnyway, my question before I start cutting holes in my table is if there has been any kind of agreed upon pickup, meaning shape, location, etc.

Mine will be zoned (it's a 4x8 table) with two blowers. I am about to the point on my build where I will cut through the sides of my table and weld in the downdraft intakes.
